US tells Israel, Turkey to 'cool it' amid tensions (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration is telling U.S. allies Israel and Turkey to "cool it" as tensions between the two rise over aid flotillas to Gaza.

Amid growing concern over a possible naval confrontation in the Mediterranean, the State Department said Friday that both sides should exercise restraint and avoid provocative actions or rhetoric. Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the "cool it" message was being delivered to both Turkish and Israeli officials.

Concern intensified on Friday after Turkey said it would send naval warships to escort future aid boats leaving its territory for Gaza to prevent a repeat of last year's deadly Israeli raid on an aid flotilla. Israel said such a move would be "grave and serious."

Turkey has demanded an apology for the 2010 raid, which Israel has refused to give.
