I worked in my father's haberdashery store for almost thirty years before he passed away. It has since become my own store in which I employ one of my nephews. The business of haberdashery is on that is defiantly on the decline, and has been for the last forty years.
Some people say that the reason for the decline in the haberdashery business began ever since JFK gave his inaugural address without wearing a hat. I know it sounds a bit odd but surprisingly a lot of people put a lot of stock in this theory. I on the other hand do not buy it for a second. I think that the reason JFK did not wear a hat is because he was responding to popular sentiment, as most politicians are want to do. In a line, JFK was reacting to an already precipitous decline in hat wearing.
But if you think about it, as I'm sure you will by the time I'm done, you might see the negligible fact that people don't wear hats as much as more than an isolated piece of information in American history.
I for one, think that the reasons people don't were hats is a symptom of a much more complex and broader decline in American decorum and social structure. But in order for me to impart this idea persuasively, I must first digress and provide some background information. What is the reason why Muslims and Jews and members of the catholic clergy cover their heads? The answer is that covering one's head is a symbol of humility before god. It is a sign of surrender to something higher that one's self. Now regardless of your opinions of, or affiliations with any religion, the idea I think is a noble one.
At any rate, this concept spilled over into American culture and is the reason why gentlemen in England and the colonies used to wear hats.
Hats went from being a religious garment to a symbol of respect. Now don't get me wrong, I have found a way to bolster hat sales in my store by using the popular mannequin method. What this means in simple terms, and this is something everyone in the clothing business knows, is that if you give prominence to a product it is far more likely to sell. So I put my best hats on mannequin's heads and it has shown to have some results. But if I am to conclude my diagnostic about why people done wear hats anymore I best get on with it.
The reason why people don't wear hats anymore is because people don't have as much respect as they once did. People do not refer to their father as "sir' or "father" and the only place in the America were people still say madam is way down south. The decline of respect is strongly related to the decline in haberdashery.
