'Dome' still a hit, helping CBS to a win last week

NEW YORK (AP) ? CBS' "Under the Dome" was the favorite gathering spot for viewers last week, keeping this summer replacement thriller ahead of the pack for its third airing.

But nipping at its heels was the Wednesday edition of NBC's "America's Got Talent," which attracted 10.707 million viewers ? just 2,000 fewer than saw "Under the Dome." The Tuesday edition of "America's Got Talent" ranked third for the week, with 9.8 million viewers, according to Nielsen Co. figures.

For the week, CBS logged six of the Top 10 programs and led overall in prime time with an average 5.34 million viewers. NBC was second with 4.69 million, followed by ABC with 3.74 million, while Univision had 3.64 million, Fox had 3.24 million, Telemundo had 1.60 million, ION Television had 1.24 million and the CW had 600,000.

USA was the week's most popular cable network, averaging 2.36 million viewers in prime time. Disney Channel had 2.34 million, History had 2.23 million.

NBC's "Nightly News" topped the evening newscasts with an average of 7.8 million viewers. ABC's "World News" was second with 6.9 million and the "CBS Evening News" had 5.9 million viewers.

For the week of July 8-14, the top 10 shows, their networks and viewerships were: "Under the Dome," CBS, 10.709 million; "America's Got Talent" (Wednesday), NBC, 10.707 million; "America's Got Talent," (Tuesday), NBC, 9.81 million; "NCIS," CBS, 8.71 million; "The Big Bang Theory," CBS, 8.16 million; "The Bachelorette," ABC, 6.88 million; "Two and a Half Men," CBS, 6.80 million; "60 Million," CBS, 6.44 million; "Big Brother" (Sunday), CBS, 6.27 million; "America's Got Talent (Wednesday, 8 p.m. EDT repeat), NBC, 6.24 million.

So, how much money does it cost to produce your podcast, and why ...

79489-breaking-bad-breaking-bad

Something happened over the course of the last 48 hours that had many people on the internet questioning the cost of producing a successful podcast, and ever since, I?ve had quite a few people approach me about it. Not too long ago, I wrote an article titled Obsession or Passion?, about my four years of blogging and podcasting here at Sound On Sight. I felt now would be a great time to release a follow up to that piece, and in doing so, I would adress these questions.

How much does it cost to produce the Sound On Sight podcast?

I can?t claim to be an expert in podcasting but I have been doing it for about five years. Between the 350 episodes of the Sound On Sight podcast and 50 Sordid Cinema shows, we will reach our 400th recording next week. And that doesn?t include the Walking Dead Podcast, which I also host, produce and edit, on a separate feed.

The answer to this first question, is however, a bit complicated.

When we started, we were actually a radio show, broadcasting out of CJLO, 1690 AM, here in Montreal. At the time, we were lucky enough to use the station?s equipment to record the show. However, the biggest cost came when we left the station in 2011, after recording 250 episodes. You see, we were in dire need of purchasing equipment so we could build our own recording studio at home. That was one of only two times that we have asked our listeners to help us out financially. The second, and last time, came when we asked for help to get us to the Toronto International Film Festival.

Every podcast is different, and every podcaster uses different services, and every show drives in a different amount of listeners, which uses up a certain amount of bandwidth. So I can only speak for us, but our biggest expense comes with the actual website, and not the podcasts. Our bandwidth is already included with the cost for soundonsight.org, which is why we can afford to have seven shows on our site, regardless of their popularity.

Anyone with an Internet connection and some inexpensive audio equipment can produce a podcast and make it available online. Hence the reason there are thousands of podcasters, ranging from unemployed teenagers to businessmen to celebrities. In order to put your podcast online you either need a website, or you need a podcasting network such as Libsyn. If you are tech savvy, your best getting your own website, and storing the mp3?s there. It would actually be cheaper than paying a monthly fee to a company like Libsyn, and you will be sole proprietor of your show; not to mention you?ll have a website to accompany it. There are plenty of web hosting companies that offer great deals. Unless you have tens of thousands of listeners, you could easily get the needed storage space for all your episodes, and bandwidth combined, for about $5 ? $7 a month. In fact, if you are smart, you can even get unlimited bandwidth. I know, because we had an unlimited plan during our first four years. So for $7 a month, I was able to host The Televerse, The Walking Dead, The Game of Thrones, Sordid Cinema, Doctor Who and the Sound On Sight podcasts, all under one roof, and all billed to me in one invoice.

What if we have too many listeners using too much bandwidth? Wouldn?t that cost a lot?

Again, you just need to shop around and find the right provider. Just check out our stats for one of our shows below. If you think you will reach more downloads in a month?s time, than maybe you should play it safe and try to find unlimited service.

SOSSTATS

And now, to answer the biggest question posed to me lately: Should I donate to a podcast?

This is a silly question. It is your money and thus your decision. If you feel a podcast is worth your hard earned money, than sure donate. As a podcaster, I wouldn?t say no to a donation. It is hard work. My only gripe comes when a podcaster is dishonest about why he or she claims they need donations to keep a show alive and running. Yes, there are costs, but all too often, it seems podcasters throw in the most ridiculous reasons, like handling their cable bill. Nobody is cancelling their internet or cable because you are not willing to pay for their podcast, and these days, Skype and a fairly affordable microphone would do the trick. In fact, when we recorded our show using professional equipment at the station, we actually had to decrease the quality of the file when uploading each episode to our server. Now that we use a simple mic and Skype, we don?t have to decrease the quality, and the end result is the same. The difference in sound is negligible.

Why did we decrease the quality of our mp3?

We also have to consider our listeners, and the amount of bandwidth they are using, especially, if they are like me, and listen on a mobile device. I can?t tell you how many times, I?ve gone over my usage because I listen to far too many podcasts. So the lower the quality, the better it is for a downloader. At the end of the month, those podcasters aren?t helping to pay for my phone bill. So when a very popular website is demanding money for their podcast, ?threatening to shut it down otherwise, I?d just ask you look at all the variables, before feeling guilty about not donating.

What about advertising?

Popular websites with millions of readers more than likely have premium ad deals. Now I know what you are thinking. Most people who listen to podcasts do so through iTunes and never even access the web site, thus never making an impression on the ads appearing on the post. This is very true, which is why I always listen to a podcast on the actual site, and I recommend everyone ditch iTunes and to the same if you want to support a podcast. Just think about how their ad revenue would increase each month, if the thousands of iTunes listeners were driving traffic to their website instead.

I?m no expert in advertising, and if I was, I might just be able to make a profit from our site, but here is what I know.

CPM advertising networks pay according to the number of impressions that the ads displayed on their site generate. CPM stands for Cost per Mille, and it refers to the cost for 1,000 impressions. So if a blog generates 1,000,000 page views monthly displaying an advertising banner with a $1 CPM, the publisher will earn $1000 monthly minus rev share. But premium ads can earn a publisher anywhere from $6 ? 12 for every 1000 impressions. CPM rates vary with the network, the position of the ad and the format, the network, and so on. So if a website has millions of readers, they most likely have a higher CPM rate. So do the math.

If you are a podcaster, and you are going to ask for money, just be honest about why. If you believe you produce a quality show, and it is worth charging for, than state that as a reason. No one has ever has a problem in paying for entertainment.

Have you ever donated to a show or would you?

I?ve only donated to one show, once in my life time, and that show was Filmspotting. Adam puts in so much time in reaching out to his audience, and so I feel he deserves it. I am pretty sure he spends more time with feedback, than actually reviewing films. Filmspotting also delivers a quality product every week, and they are one of the few reasons we started. They are a big inspiration to us all.

If I had the money, I would donate to several podcasts, but unfortunately I am not financially in a position to do so. However, I would never donate to any podcaster that threatens to shutdown their show or demands it for insincere reasons.

I?ve asked Bill Thompson to write an article listing his favorite film podcasts. I recommend looking out for it, since I?m sure you?ll discover quality shows, all worth donating to.

Why don?t you get a sponsor?

The topic has arisen several times in the past few years with my colleague Simon Howell, and the answer is always the same. The podcast is our escape. It is the fun part. If I had to beg for money, I?d prefer to use the actual website as an excuse. You know what?s hard work? Hard work is writing a film review or a 2000 word article. Hard work is editing content and keeping the site running. Recording a podcast is a blast. The last thing I want to do is worry about recording some 60 second spot to promote a product I don?t care much about. As far as donations go: We just don?t feel right about asking our listeners to pay us, to sit around and discuss movies with friends. When we ask, it is because we really need it. With that said, if you want to support our show, simply give us a rating on iTunes or like us on Facebook.

I?m not saying that I am apposed to podcasts asking for donations. I just mentioned above, that I myself donated to Filmspotting, and we?ve asked when needed. All I am saying is, don?t always believe the hype. There are many talented podcasters out there, who are not fortunate enough to host their podcast on an extremely popular website. I like Hollywood films and I like independent cinema. The same applies to podcasts. I support both, but for the right reasons.

So why are you leaving the podcast?

As mentioned above, I love recording the podcast. The problem is, I wear too many hats here at Sound On Sight: Tech support, web design, reviewer, blogger, editor, not to mention recording, editing and producing several podcasts every week. I actually made a huge sacrifice and went unemployed for six months. Why, you ask? In the first four years of running Sound On Sight, I worked a part time and full time job, while in and out of school. The only reason I was able to barely keep up, was because I was lucky enough to work two jobs that allowed me access to the internet at all times. So needless to say, multi-tasking was essential. I took six months off so I could concentrate on improving certain aspects of the website, that I just had no time for in the past. Some of you may have noticed the drastic visual change, but that is just the start of it all. There is plenty you don?t see, and more to come.

I guess after five years, I need a break. I?ve wanted to walk away many times in the past, but I was always searching for someone to take over. Simon is amazing, but he also has too much on his plate. He needs an equal, and so I?ve decided to ask Josh Spiegel, the host of the Mousterpiece Cinema podcast to replace me. Josh has quickly become one of Sound On Sight?s most valuable players, and I know that he will make ten times the host I was. I am confident the show will be safe in his hands.

There are still many unanswered questions. For starters, we are still not yet sure what is happening with our Sordid Cinema series. There is a chance that I will stay onboard to host the show. Either way, I am not leaving the podcast world entirely, as I still have The Walking Dead podcast to record. I guess you can say, I am simply cutting back, in order to concentrate on other things, and hopefully bigger projects, and perhaps, find a way to take Sound On Sight to the next level.

With that said, I?d like to thank each and every listener, co-host and hater. The past five years have been absolutely incredible. We should be posting our 400th recording sometime around Valentine?s Day. It will be heartbreaking for me, but it needs to be done.

Nothing but love,

Ricky D

HBT: Hill, D-backs agree to $35M extension

Three weeks after Aaron Hill and the Diamondbacks were said to be having preliminary extension talks the two sides have agreed to a deal, with Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reporting that Hill will get $35 million for three seasons.

Hill signed a two-year, $11 million deal last offseason and would have become a free agent after this season, so it?s easy to see how much his leverage increased following a year in which the second baseman hit .302 with 26 homers, 44 doubles, and an .882 OPS in 156 games while playing his usual stellar defense.

Hill was terrible in his final season-and-a-half in Toronto, allowing Arizona to acquire him at a discount in mid-2011, but he?s been fantastic for the Diamondbacks with a .304 batting average and .881 OPS in 189 total games.

Arizona was able to keep the commitment relatively short?Hill will be 34 years old when the deal ends?and $11.667 million per season is similar to the average annual value in recent deals for fellow second basemen Brandon Phillips and Dan Uggla.

Auto Title Loans And Rent-To-Own Centers: What's Better?

Auto title loan lenders and rent-to-own centers may have seen an upsurge in business with the Baltimore Ravens facing off against the San Francisco 49ers in the year's biggest football game. One out of every two households in America is said to have watched Superbowl XLVII, rooting on their team with painted faces and a plate full of food. An estimated 7.5 million fans went out and purchased new TV's specifically to watch the game. With the average price of a big screen TV costing anywhere from $500-$3500, consumers whose cash flow didn't support their spending had to get creative with their purchasing options.

Some may have chosen to take out an auto title loan based on the value and equity of their car or truck. With lenders offering up to $5000, there's plenty of wiggle room to purchase that flat-screen or Plasma. It' a hefty price to pay, though, if the borrower can't repay the loan with their next paycheck, or within the 1-3 month time period that the lenders give to repay. Borrowing $1000 will cost around $200 in loan fees not to mention paying high interest rates should the loan be "rolled-over" due to the debtor's inability to make their payments. That is if it's paid back right away. It more time is needed, fees and interest alone could surpass the original amount of the loan. If the borrower can pay back quickly, the hit to their wallet may not be as devastating. If the borrower goes into default, the auto title lender can go as far as repossessing the car.

Those who don't want to hand over the title to their automobile in the midst of football fever may have taken the rent-to-own road, giving them the option to make payments on their newly acquired game gadget. That same $1000 TV could end up costing thousands, though, should the renter get stuck in a cycle of "buying-over-time".

So what is the best way to go when wanting to make a large purchase? An auto title loan that potentially puts your car at risk of being repossessed or renting-own-own which could send you into payment pandemonium? Either way, you may be setting yourself up for a financial dilemma if you can't afford to make payments on your newly acquired merchandise.

Be sure to consider the pro's and cons of both before you make a commitment. If you rent-to-own your TV you will make monthly payments that may be more suitable to your budget but in the long run could wreak havoc on your bank account. You will eventually own the TV outright and won't have to worry about your credit score when applying because rent-to-own stores typically loan to anyone. On the flip side, it could take years to pay off that TV which means you could end up spending three times as much as the TV is worth. Not to mention, if you default on your payments, the store has the option to take back your TV.

If you choose to utilize an auto title lender to get the cash you need in order to go out and purchase the TV, you won't have to worry about your credit history being a factor in the approval process. Title lenders don't require a credit check. You will get the cash overnight in most cases and will own the TV outright once it's purchased. The risky part comes if you can't pay back your loan when the lender requires. In most cases you will have one-three months to make good on your loan but if you default, the lender has the right to repossess your car. That's a hefty price to pay for watching your beloved team try to reach #1 NFL status.

In either case, you may be taking too much of a risk just to have that larger than life viewing device. When it comes time to make a large purchase, take a good look at your budget and consider whether or not you are in the position to not only borrow, but to repay. The long term consequences of your short-term desires could come back to tackle you and your wallet.

What genes behind dog facial features tell us

Jeff Schoenebeck

Dog species (Canis familiaris) have vastly different skull shapes, from the pug (foreground) to the gray wolf (background). Studies of the genetics that control these shapes could apply to humans, too, scientists say.

By Tanya Lewis
LiveScience

Thanks to human breeders, dogs exhibit an impressive variety of skull shapes. Studying the genes that determine these shapes could provide insight into human skull development and craniofacial disorders, scientists say.

In a new study, scientists detail the biological and historical origins of dog skull shapes, highlighting some of the genetic developments that gave rise to different breeds.

"Sometime during the Paleolithic," the researchers write in the February issue of the journal Genetics, "a remarkable transformation occurred. Small numbers of gray wolves adopted a new pack master ? humans." Over the years, dog fanciers and breeders have tinkered with those canines so much that more than 400 dog breeds exist today worldwide.

Much of the variation is in skull characteristics.?"Dogs can serve as a model for skull growth and shape determination, because the genetic conservation between dogs and humans makes it highly likely that craniofacial development is regulated similarly between both species," study co-author Jeffrey Schoenebeck of the National Institutes of Health said in a statement. [See The 10 Most Popular Dog Breeds]

From the "pushed-in" face of a bulldog to the elongated snout of the Afghan, dog craniums run the gamut. Skull shape genetics is complex, and multiple genes are often involved. Researchers have begun to pick apart the genes that are responsible for shapes that resemble human conditions such as brachycephaly (a flattened head) and dolichocephaly (an elongated head).

Researchers also have?studied traits that fit neither description, such as the Chihuahua's?rounded skull or the bull terrier's downward angled muzzle. By comparing genetic variations among these skull shapes, the team can tease out which genes may be responsible for a flattened head, for instance.

While the researchers note wryly, "the dog model is young in human years," they say that understanding these genes and their interactions might help explain craniofacial defects in humans.

Skateboarder faces arrest for reckless racing

By Samantha Lee and Wendell Roelf, Reuters

CAPE TOWN - One of South Africa's top skateboarders is facing arrest over a video posted on YouTube of him careering down a Cape Town street at a professed 68 mph to set off a speed camera, Cape Town city officials said on Thursday.

The "Spoofing the Traffic Camera" video, which has notched up more than 200,000 YouTube hits, shows skater Decio Lourenco, hands folded behind his back to decrease wind resistance, hurtling down the mountain road in fading light.

Motorists on the opposite side have their headlights on.

Toward the bottom of the run, he is seen throwing up his hands in jubilation after a GPS system strapped to his foot showed he had clocked up 68 mph in a 37 mph zone, local media said.

"We have handed over the matter to traffic officials and want him arrested," JP Smith, the Cape Town official in charge of safety and security, told Reuters.

"The speed limit is irrelevant. He is seen careering down the road in a reckless and dangerous manner."

The road in question, Kloof Nek, is one of Cape Town's steepest and has been used to host extreme skateboarding events, although only when closed to traffic. The city does not allow skateboarding on public roads.

The threat of arrest for one of their most celebrated comrades has the close-knit skateboarding community up in arms, with posts on the National Skate Collective Facebook page calling for "mass action."

"The city is trying to shut us down," read the page, which carries the popular skater tag-line "Skate or Die."

Key to antidepressant response uncovered

Feb. 7, 2013 ? Through a series of investigations in mice and humans, Johns Hopkins researchers have identified a protein that appears to be the target of both antidepressant drugs and electroconvulsive therapy. Results of their experiments explain how these therapies likely work to relieve depression by stimulating stem cells in the brain to grow and mature. In addition, the researchers say, these experiments raise the possibility of predicting individual people's response to depression therapy, and fine-tuning treatment accordingly. Reports on separate aspects of the research were published in December on the Molecular Psychiatry website, and will also appear in the Feb. 7 issue of Cell Stem Cell.

"Previous studies have shown that antidepressants and electroconvulsive therapy both activate neural stem cells in the adult brain to divide and form new neurons," says Hongjun Song, Ph.D., a professor of neurology and director of the Stem Cell Program at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine's Institute for Cell Engineering. "What were missing were the specific molecules linking antidepressant treatment and stem cell activation."

To make that link, Song's team and its collaborators assembled a body of evidence from different types of experiments. In one, they compared gene activity in the brains of mice that had and had not been treated with electroconvulsive therapy, looking specifically at genes with protein products that are known to regulate neural stem cells. The comparison turned up differences in the activity of one inhibitor gene for a chemical chain reaction that had been previously implicated in stimulating neural stem cells. Specifically, the therapy reduced the amount of protein the inhibitor gene, sFRP3, produced, which would in turn have given the growth-stimulating chain reaction freer rein.

To learn more about sFRP3's effects, the team next compared normal mice with mice that had been engineered to lack the sFRP3 protein. They found that the modified mice behaved like normal mice on antidepressants; moreover, giving antidepressants to the modified mice did not further change their behavior. This strongly suggested that antidepressants work by blocking sFRP3; without sFRP3, the modified mice had nothing to block.

In order to tie their mouse work to what happens in the human brain, the researchers next analyzed genetic information from 541 depression patients and tracked their response to a course of antidepressant drugs. The team found three common variations in the human version of sFRP3 that were linked to a better response to therapy. Wondering what these variations actually did, the researchers searched a database that correlates gene sequences to gene activity in the human brain. All three variations caused less gene activity, they found, meaning that there likely would have been less inhibitor.

Song notes that sFRP3 is also regulated by other conditions, including exercise. "This gene's activity is very sensitive to the amount of activity in the brain, so sFRP3 seems to be a gatekeeper that links activity to new neuron growth," he says. The finding has two major near-term implications, he says: It could lead to genetic tests that enable doctors to predict a patient's response to antidepressants, and it provides a target for potential new therapies for the disease.

A Gift of a Fish ? clearcasting

(Clearing out my email and found this piece I had written and sent to myself back in October.)

As some of you may be aware, my mother plays WoW.

Growing up, I watched her devour Nintendo games with a feverish passion.

The entirety of the Zelda world was carefully mapped out, square by square, on a pad of grid paper. Every inch of every screen was bombed and flamed, the results meticulously noted.

Then she discovered strategy guides.

Castlevania was cleared.

Numerous princess were found to be in other castles.

Games I had never heard of and have long since been forgotten were conquered. I remember lots of side-scrolling RPGs that made little sense but the graphics (at the time) were magical.

In short, my mother was a gaming fiend.

As I grew older, I moved away and we spent less time talking.

Then I started playing a game called Rappelz. It was a free game (until you start getting into those damned microtransactions!) and something we could ?do? together.

I moved to WoW. And eventually got her an account so that she could follow.

Sometime between the Marios of my youth and entering Darnassus, my mother lost all game-sense she ever had.

So when I say that my mother plays WoW, she literally plays. She explores and gets lost and dies a lot. But she has fun.

I?ve nudged her here and there to correct some fairly obscene misconceptions (No, warlocks do not need to stack agility ?to run faster?) but have otherwise let her run amok on her own.

With the introduction of Mists of Panderia, she has been heartbroken that we couldn?t get her the expansion immediately.

I thought about it and the only thing she?s really missing is the capability to roll a monk.

Pet battles are already in.

Creating a panda is in.

Level 85+ content would matter ? if she had a character above 62. She still hasn?t been to Outland, let alone Northrend or any of the Cata zones.

I?ve been dragging my Horde DK through Pandaland (so much easier in plate with self-healing than on a mage, even with an ilevel difference of some 50 points) and completed the quest that rewards Fishy.

Now I have 2 Fishies.

Fishy is awesome and all, but I bet everyone and their mother (except mine) will have a whole school of Fishies by the time we?re done leveling alts.

So I had the bright idea to gift Fishy to my mother.

I even went the extra step of leveling it up to 4 so she would have a bit of a boost.

Get her to log on.

We don?t have many characters on the same servers anymore since I?ve moved around a bit.

Gave her Fishy.

You are not high enough level to learn this pet.

Wow, so you can?t even learn the pet to summon as a companion if it?s trained. I think this could have been better thought out.

Drag her to the pet trainer.

Except her only toon on this server is level 1.

Can?t learn pets until level 10.

I relearn level 4 Fishy and we log on to a different server.

I?ve got a level 20 bank alt that can cage Fishy.

She gets on her level 55 warlock (all in level 40-ish gear? with attack power? *cringe*) and take her to the pet trainer.

I have no gold resources left on this server. Her warlock doesn?t even have a single gold.

She hops around and finds a character with some gold.

Learns pet training.

Still can?t learn Fishy.

Drag her around Org leveling up a random pet and completing the introduction quests. She even captured a rare quality pet.

An hour later, she is the proud owner of a level 4 Fishy.

She had an absolute blast and is really looking forward to more pet battles.

Now if only I could get her to level 90 and she could learn to farm.

USPS ends Saturday letter delivery. How much fuel will it save?

USPS owns and operates the world's largest civilian vehicle fleet, paying $1 billion a year for fuel. Ending Saturday letter delivery will help cut those costs, but the savings for the USPS are less than you might expect.

By David J. Unger,?Correspondent / February 6, 2013

USPS letter carrier Kevin Pownall gathers mail from the back of his truck in Philadelphia. Because the USPS does not pass on fuel surcharges to customers, it absorbs any jump in gasoline prices.

The post office will no longer deliver letters on Saturdays. The move comes as the United States Postal Service struggles with shrinking mail volume and rising?operating costs.

So how much money can it expect to save by scrapping Saturday delivery? Overall, the Postal Service expects to save $2 billion a year out of an annual operating budget of more than $70 billion. A big part of that saving presumably is labor costs. Another savings is fuel.

The Postal Service owns and operates the world's largest civilian vehicle fleet with more than 213,000 cars, trucks, and vans that travel?1.2 billion miles each year. In fiscal year 2010, USPS vehicles consumed about 146?million gasoline gallon?equivalents (GGE), or about?700 GGE?if you include contract vehicles. The cost of fueling and maintaining USPS vehicles runs about $1 billion a year.

And those costs have been rising, despite USPS efforts to curb them.?

ACL injuries on the rise in younger patients

Until a child's bones have fully matured (in girls, typically by age 14; in boys, age 16), an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)the primary, stabilizing ligament of the knee jointrequires special consideration, treatment and care to ensure appropriate healing and to prevent long-term complications.

According to a review article in the February 2013 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (JAAOS), ACL injuries once were considered rare in children and adolescents. However, the number of ACL injuries in young athletes is on the rise, "whether they result from year-round training, less free play or increased single sport concentration," said lead study author and pediatric orthopaedic surgeon Jeremy Frank, MD, with Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital's Department of Pediatric Orthopaedics and [U18] Sports Medicine in Hollywood, Fla.

To avoid potential future complications, such as early onset osteoarthritis, the literature review outlines the optimal strategies for treating pediatric ACL injuries based on the specifics of the injury and the child's skeletal (bone), age and developmental maturity.

Among the recommendations:

  • Children should be treated by an orthopaedic surgeon who has expertise in the operative treatment of pediatric ACL injuries.
  • For pediatric and adolescent patients with partial ACL tears compromising less than 50 percent of the diameter of the ligament, non-surgical management, including activity modification, bracing and/or physical therapy, can be considered.
  • Treatment for complete ACL ruptures typically involves transphyseal ACL reconstruction surgery that partially or completely spares the femoral physis (the growth plate, contributing to 70 percent of thigh-bone growth), and adult-type surgical or arthroscopic reconstruction in adolescents at or nearing skeletal maturity.
  • Postoperative management may include weight-bearing and activity modifications, bracing, and a progressive physical therapy program emphasizing range of motion (ROM), closed-chain strengthening (exercises on the knee while the foot remains stationary) and a gradual and measured return to sport-specific maneuvers and activities.

"There are currently numerous safe and effective surgical techniques to reconstruct the ACL in the skeletally immature sportsperson to restore stability and forestall the early progression towards meniscal and chondral (cartilage) pathologies (disease)," said Dr. Frank. Complications from ACL surgery are rare in children when the appropriate operation is performed on the right patient.

A spiral galaxy with a secret

Feb. 5, 2013 ? The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope -- with a little help from an amateur astronomer -- has produced one of the best views yet of nearby spiral galaxy Messier 106. Located a little over 20 million light-years away, practically a neighbour by cosmic standards, Messier 106 is one of the brightest and nearest spiral galaxies to our own.

Despite its appearance, which looks much like countless other galaxies, Messier 106 hides a number of secrets. Thanks to this image, which combines data from Hubble with observations by amateur astronomers Robert Gendler and Jay GaBany, they are revealed as never before.

At its heart, as in most spiral galaxies, is a supermassive black hole, but this one is particularly active. Unlike the black hole at the centre of the Milky Way, which pulls in wisps of gas only occasionally, Messier 106's black hole is actively gobbling up material. As the gas spirals towards the black hole, it heats up and emits powerful radiation. Part of the emission from the centre of Messier 106 is produced by a process that is somewhat similar to that in a laser -- although here the process produces bright microwave radiation.*

As well as this microwave emission from Messier 106's heart, the galaxy has another startling feature -- instead of two spiral arms, it appears to have four. Although the second pair of arms can be seen in visible light images as ghostly wisps of gas, as in this image, they are even more prominent in observations made outside of the visible spectrum, such as those using X-ray or radio waves.

Unlike the normal arms, these two extra arms are made up of hot gas rather than stars, and their origin remained unexplained until recently. Astronomers think that these, like the microwave emission from the galactic centre, are caused by the black hole at Messier 106's heart, and so are a totally different phenomenon from the galaxy's normal, star-filled arms.

The extra arms appear to be an indirect result of jets of material produced by the violent churning of matter around the black hole. As these jets travel through the galactic matter they disrupt and heat up the surrounding gas, which in turn excites the denser gas in the galactic plane and causes it to glow brightly. This denser gas closer to the centre of the galaxy is tightly-bound, and so the arms appear to be straight. However, the looser disc gas further out is blown above or below the disc in the opposite direction from the jet, so that the gas curves out of the disc -- producing the arching red arms seen here.

Despite carrying his name, Messier 106 was neither discovered nor catalogued by the renowned 18th century astronomer Charles Messier. Discovered by his assistant, Pierre M?chain, the galaxy was never added to the catalogue in his lifetime. Along with six other objects discovered but not logged by the pair, Messier 106 was posthumously added to the Messier catalogue in the 20th century.

Amateur astronomer Robert Gendler retrieved archival Hubble images of M 106 to assemble a mosaic of the centre of the galaxy. He then used his own and fellow astrophotographer Jay GaBany's observations of M 106 to combine with the Hubble data in areas where there was less coverage, and finally, to fill in the holes and gaps where no Hubble data existed.

The centre of the galaxy is composed almost entirely of Hubble data taken by the Advanced Camera for Surveys, Wide Field Camera 3, and Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 detectors. The outer spiral arms are predominantly HST data colourised with ground-based data taken by Gendler's and GaBany's 12.5-inch and 20-inch telescopes, located at very dark remote sites in New Mexico, USA.

Gendler was a prizewinner in the recent Hubble's Hidden Treasures image processing competition. Another prizewinner, Andr? van der Hoeven, entered a different version of Messier 106, combining Hubble and NOAO data.

*Lasers work when light stimulates emission of more light from a cloud of excited gas, with the original light in effect being amplified (the word laser is an acronym for light amplification by the stimulated emission of radiation). The centre of M106 harbours a similar phenomenon called a maser (short for microwave amplification by the stimulated emission of radiation), in which microwave radiation, which is at longer wavelengths than visible light, is emitted. Note that unlike human-made lasers, which are designed to produce a narrow beam, astronomical masers shine in all directions.

Both heavy and incompatible drinking can increase the chances of divorce

Feb. 5, 2013 ? High levels of drinking have repeatedly been shown to predict divorce. The most cited explanation for this is that excessive alcohol use disrupts daily tasks and functioning, and increases spousal conflicts. A study of the effects of drinking among husbands versus wives, and of similar versus dissimilar drinking in couples, has found that both level of drinking and compatibility in drinking can have an influence on divorce.

Results will be published in the May 2013 issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research and are currently available at Early View.

"On average, divorced people drink more than married people," said Fartein Ask Torvik, a researcher at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health as well as corresponding author for the study. "To some extent, this is due to increased drinking after a divorce, but people who drink heavily also have a higher risk of experiencing a divorce, so heavy drinking likely interferes fundamentally with the quality of marriage."

"Heavy alcohol consumption is a problem of great public health concern in most Western societies," added Ellinor F. Major, director of the division of mental health at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. "It often leads to dysfunctional marriages and divorces. The present study adds to our understanding of the predictive value of alcohol use, and particularly of discordant alcohol consumption for marital dissolution."

Torvik and his colleagues used data from a previous health study, in which all inhabitants in a Norwegian county were invited to participate in a health study between 1984 and 1986: 19,977 married couples partook. All participants provided information on alcohol use and mental distress. Cox regression ("time-to-event" analysis) was used to study the risk for divorce during the next 15 years, using demographics and mental distress as covariates. "There was one earlier study of this issue," said Torvik, "but we had a larger sample and a longer follow-up period."

"Essentially, the more people drink, the higher is the risk of divorce," said Torvik. "In addition, the risk of divorce is lowered if the spouses drink approximately the same amount of alcohol. This is not only true for those who drink excessively -- there is also a reduced risk of divorce if both spouses abstain totally from alcohol. Also, we found heavy drinking among women to be more strongly associated with divorce than heavy drinking among men."

"This latter finding is of major interest," said Major. "For instance, the risk of divorce is estimated to be tripled when the husband's level drinking is low and the wife's drinking is heavy, compared with couples where both drink lightly."

"There are several possible explanations for this," said Torvik. "One of them is that women in general seem to be more strongly affected by heavy drinking than men are. Thus, heavy-drinking women may be more impaired than heavy-drinking men. It is, however, important to note that heavy drinking is much less common among women than among men."

"Heavy drinking among women is also less acceptable than among men in our society," said Major. "A wife's heavy drinking probably also interferes more with general family life -- that is, the caring role of the mother, upbringing of children, etc. Perhaps the husband is more apt to the leave the spouse than is the wife when major problems occur. These factors may account for the higher risk for marital dissolution when the wife is a heavy drinker than when the husband is a heavy drinker."

"Research on alcohol use and relationships should always include data from both spouses," said Torvik. "The interaction between the spouses is too important to ignore. Likewise, clinicians working with this population should be interested in the alcohol use of the spouse."

"Couples who intend to marry should be aware of the drinking pattern of their partner since it may become a problem in the future," added Major. "Someone with a light or moderate alcohol use, who has a spouse who drinks heavily, should encourage that spouse to change their drinking pattern into light or moderate level if the main concern is a lasting marriage of good quality. Good advice probably would be to encourage a similar pattern of moderate or light drinking in both spouses."

"Furthermore, while our results indicate that compatibility in drinking is important with regard to divorce, a couple with two heavy drinkers still has a higher divorce risk than couples consisting of light drinkers," noted Torvik. "I would also like to add that we have only been looking into divorce -- alcohol may lead to other social or health problems."

"Most couples in the present study have children," said Major. "It would be of interest to study the benefits and disadvantages for the children if parents choose to stay or leave a marriage because of discordant or concordant heavy drinking. From the children's point of view, parental divorce brings a lot of suffering, but nonetheless, marriage dissolution might be preferable for some children rather than parents staying in a marriage with poor quality."

David Letterman, Andrew Luck Super Bowl Ad: Commercial Catch Likely A Big Hit Indiana (VIDEO)

At the very least, this "Late Show" commercial co-starring Andrew Luck and David Letterman had to be popular in Indiana.

Fresh off a breakout rookie season with the Indianapolis Colts, Luck was tossing the ball around with Letterman, an Indiana native. As should come as no surprise to those who watched him stay cool under pressure all season long, Luck seemed at ease on camera.

With Letterman and Luck merely throwing the ball around with a young boy, this ad wasn't going for shock but it delivered a nice moment during the game, also giving CBS a chance to show a bit of synergy between the NFL and one of its stars.

As the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens battled for the right to lift the Lombardi Trophy, Super Bowl advertisers competed for another prize: your attention. Each time that CBS cut away from Super Bowl XLVII to pay the bills (or because the lights went out), another group of blockbuster commercials and movie trailers were unveiled (although many had been teased). At your Super Bowl party, were people paying closer attention during the game or the commercial breaks?

While memorable Super Bowl commercials like Apple's '1984' and Snickers' spot that featured Betty White will be remembered so many more are soon forgotten or, even worse, ridiculed as super fails. Will this ad make this year's best list? Is it controversial? Or, even worse, destined to be forgotten?

The holidays were fine once the flu left our house | The Plaincity ...

A whole brand new year lies ahead. What does it have in store for us all? Only God knows so let us put our trust in him. I hope everyone had a great, safe holiday. We had a very nice holiday after the flu bug finally left our house.

Christmas Day was spent here at home. Elizabeth?s friend Timothy and Susan? s friend Mose joined us for the day. It was a memorable day playing games and just being together as a family. Our thoughts and prayers went out to the ones missing family members this holiday season. They are missed even more during the special holiday time.

I put a breakfast casserole in the oven to heat while everyone opened their gifts. Days like that go way too fast.

Sunday we had the annual Christmas potluck dinner after church services. As always there was more than enough food. Daughter Loretta made cupcakes and frosted and decorated them to take along.

Monday evening Jacob, Emma and family came in honor of Joe?s birthday which was Dec. 22. Joe grilled chicken and hot wings while I made scalloped potatoes. We also froze homemade ice cream for our dessert and Emma brought donuts.

Jacob, Emma, and family, Timothy and Mose also spent New Year?s Day here. We had a brunch which was a? breakfast haystack.?

Our breakfast haystack menu was biscuits cut into bite sized pieces, scrambled eggs, fried potatoes, chopped bacon, and diced ham, shredded cheese, green peppers, diced tomatoes, diced onion, cheese sauce, salsa, hot peppers, and sausage gravy. After dishes were washed we exchanged gifts with Emma and Jacob?s family. We had a name exchange which was interesting to see who all had who. Then everyone went sledding in our hay field except for Jacob, Joe, Emma, and I. We stayed in the warm house and played board games.

Timothy had a sled tied behind his pony and gave some pretty fast rides around the hay field. It looked liked it was a challenge to stay on the sled when he took some fast curves.

They also had fun sliding down the hill in the sled. The snow made some nice gliding downhill. When they were all tired from sledding they came back in to warm up. We set snacks out for everyone. Emma brought a lot of snacks too.

I heated up the leftover chicken and wings from the evening before. The rest of the afternoon was spent playing games.

Daughter Elizabeth went back to work at the factory on Wednesday. The children go back to school on Monday. Husband Joe will head back to work at the factory, also on Monday.

Daughter Susan has two more ponies here to train. One is a little miniature pony and the other is a bigger sized pony like our pony Stormy. Her friend Mose?s dad gave Susan the pony to keep for her own. She is excited and eager to train her. Benjamin and Susan have the pony, which is named Roxy, hitched to the pony cart now for the first time. It always makes me a little nervous until she has the ponies going good. Benjamin, 13, enjoys helping her train the ponies. Jacob, Emma, and family went to Berne, Indiana to have Christmas with Jacobs? family. While there they stopped in to say hi to brother Amos, Nancy and family. Amos sent along a roll of his homemade summer sausage he made. It was very good and disappeared quite fast around here. We appreciated it very much.

Chinese official booted after account of lurid affair emerges

By Ed Flanagan, Producer, NBC News

BEIJING ? The rise of new Chinese leader Xi Jinping last November has not been good for mainland officials caught with their pants down.

In recent months, a slew of low-level Communist officials as well as a few high ranking ones ?most notably the vice party chief of the southwestern province of Sichuan, Li Chuncheng ? have been exposed by local media and dismissed from their positions after their sexual peccadilloes came to light.

The latest senior official to be toppled due to a sex scandal, Yi Junqing, was a vice minister in charge of China Central Committee?s Central Compilation and Translation Bureau.

His dismissal was announced Thursday in a one-sentence statement by Chinese state media, which simply noted he had been "removed from post for 'improper lifestyle.'"?

The terse release by the state-run Xinhua news service belied the expansive and often lurid claims that have flooded the Web about Yi?s sexual trysts. Yi was seemingly exposed by his alleged mistress, Chang Yan, who posted a 120,000 Chinese character essay online detailing the sex, money and gifts exchanged over many months.

Though many of the affair?s particulars read like the clich?-ridden narratives familiar to many Chinese who have followed the adventures of officials over the years, this case is unique in that it shows the lengths to which many in China go to secure coveted ministry jobs, and the economic and social security that comes with those jobs.

Chang, 35, a married native of China?s Shanxi province, was a visiting post-doctorate student at the Translation Bureau and had aspirations of landing a job there once her studies were completed.

Earning employment at the bureau?s Beijing office ? and thus the proper permits needed to bring her husband from Shanxi to live and work in Beijing ?would require the authorization of Yi, who ran the bureau.

According to Chang?s account, the price for that approval turned out to be steep, both morally and financially.

"I was trying to figure out what he wants, money or me," Chang wrote in one excerpt translated by the U.K.?s Telegraph newspaper. "There is no free lunch if I wanted to work for the bureau. I knew there was a price to pay to work for the bureau. I had already paid 10,000 yuan [USD$1,600]. He said he would take two months to get me the job and then he would invite me."

Besides giving in and becoming Yi?s mistress, Chang writes that she paid $10,000 in total to Yi to secure this government position. Yi?s failure to deliver on that job led Chang to post details of the sordid affair on her private blog, she said.

That someone would sleep with a potential boss or even pay for a position is of no surprise in China, but to have it written about so openly sparked an uproar online.

Despite censors erasing the story on Chinese websites, news of the essay soon spread on the Web.

On China?s Twitter-like service, Weibo, the affair became a hot topic Friday.

A post by Chang on her blog ? where the original entry was quickly erased ? seemed to suggest that the story had been written as a piece of fiction.

"In my spare time I put together a work of fiction," Chang wrote on her blog entry. "I suffered serious depression... and regularly sank into a state of delusion and even fantasy."

Weibo users overwhelmingly dismissed the confession as forced and condemned Yi for his corruption.

"Rumor has again proven to be truth," wrote one user.

"If we got rid of officials like Yi who had these types of affairs, we?d have to eliminate 99.9 percent of them!" declared another.

Regardless of whether her story is true or not, Yi?s dismissal Thursday shows the lengths to which China?s ruling Communist Party appears willing to go in order to maintain its legitimacy and supremacy.
