VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI wished Christmas peace to the world Tuesday, decrying the slaughter of the "defenseless" in Syria and urging Israelis and Palestinians to find the courage to negotiate.
Delivering the Vatican's traditional Christmas day message from the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, Benedict also encouraged Arab spring nations, especially Egypt, to build just and respectful societies.
He prayed that China's new leaders respect religion, a reference to persecution Chinese Roman Catholics have at times endured under communism.
As the 85-year-old pontiff, bundled up in an ermine-trimmed red cape, gingerly stepped foot on the balcony, the pilgrims, tourists and Romans below backing St. Peter's Square erupted in cheers.
Less than 12 hours earlier, Benedict had led a two-hour long Christmas Eve ceremony in the basilica. He sounded hoarse and looked weary as he read his Christmas message and then holiday greetings in 65 languages.
In his "Urbi et Orbi" speech, which traditionally reviews world events and global challenges, Benedict prayed that "peace spring up for the people of Syria, deeply wounded and divided by a conflict that does not spare even the defenseless and reaps innocent victims."
He called for easier access to help refugees and for "dialogue in the pursuit of a political solution to the conflict."
Benedict prayed that God "grant Israelis and Palestinians courage to end long years of conflict and division, and to embark resolutely on the path to negotiation."
Israel, backed by the United States, opposed the Palestinian statehood bid, saying it was a ploy to bypass negotiations, something the Palestinians deny. Talks stalled four years ago.
Senior Palestinian official Saeb Erekat said that in a meeting with the pope last week, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas "emphasized our total readiness to resume negotiations." The Palestinians have not dropped their demand that Israel first stop settlement activities before returning to the negotiating table.
Hours earlier, in the ancient Bethlehem church built over the site where tradition holds Jesus was born, candles illuminated the sacred site and the joyous sound of prayer filled its overflowing halls.
Overcast skies and a cold wind in the Holy Land didn't dampen the spirits of worshippers in the biblical West Bank town. Bells pealed and long lines formed inside the fourth-century Church of the Nativity complex as Christian faithful waited to see the grotto that is Jesus' traditional birthplace.
Duncan Hardock, 24, a writer from MacLean, Va., traveled to Bethlehem from the republic of Georgia, where he had been teaching English. After passing through the separation barrier Israel built to ward off West Bank attackers, he walked to Bethlehem's Manger Square where the church stands.
"I feel we got to see both sides of Bethlehem in a really short period of time," Hardock said. "On our walk from the wall, we got to see the lonesome, closed side of Bethlehem ... But the moment we got into town, we're suddenly in the middle of the party."
Bethlehem lies 10 kilometers (6 miles) south of Jerusalem. Entry to the city is controlled by Israel, which occupied the West Bank in 1967.
For those who couldn't fit into the cavernous Bethlehem church, a loudspeaker outside broadcast the Christmas day service to hundreds of faithful in the square.
Their Palestinian hosts, who welcome this holiday as the high point of their city's year, were especially joyous this season, proud of the United Nations' recognition of an independent state of Palestine just last month.
"From this holy place, I invite politicians and men of good will to work with determination for peace and reconciliation that encompasses Palestine and Israel in the midst of all the suffering in the Middle East," said the top Roman Catholic cleric in the Holy Land, Latin Patriarch Fouad Twal in his annual address.
Back at the Vatican, Benedict offered encouragement to countries after the Arab spring of democracy protests. He had a special word for Egypt, "blessed by the childhood of Jesus."
Without citing the tumultuous politics and clashes in the region, he urged the North African region to build societies "founded on justice and respect for the dignity of every person."
Benedict prayed for the return of peace in Mali and harmony in Nigeria, where, he recalled "savage acts of terrorism continue to reap victims, particularly among Christians."
The Vatican for decades has been worried about the well-being of its flock in China, who are loyal to the pope in defiance of the communist's government support of an officially sponsored church, and relations between Beijing and the Holy See are often tense.
Speaking about China's newly installed regime leaders, Benedict expressed hope that "they will esteem the contribution of the religions, in respect for each other, in such a way that they can help to build a fraternal society for the benefit of that noble people and of the whole world."
Acknowledging Latin America's predominant Christian population, he urged government leaders to carry out commitments to development and to fighting organized crime.
In Britain, the royal family was attending Christmas Day church services at St. Mary Magdelene Church on Queen Elizabeth II's sprawling Sandringham estate, though there were a few notable absences. Prince William is spending the holiday with his pregnant wife Kate and his in-laws in the southern England village of Bucklebury, while Prince Harry is serving with British troops in Afghanistan.
Later Tuesday, the queen delivered her traditional, prerecorded Christmas message, which for the first time was broadcast in 3D.
At Canterbury cathedral, Anglican leader Rowan Williams delivered his final Christmas day sermon as archbishop of Canterbury. He acknowledged how the church's General Synod's vote against allowing women to become bishops had cost credibility and said the faithful felt a "real sense of loss" over the decision.

Kim Jung-in (an alias), a public relations officer, knew it would be difficult to raise her one-month-old daughter alone. But determined to try, she ignored family members who pressured her to opt for adoption, just as they had told her to have an abortion.
?I was confident I could get a job and take care of her on my own,? recalled Kim, 36, of the turbulent period four years ago. ?But I needed time to find work and persuade my parents I could do that.?
Time and understanding, she would find, were not on her side.
Kim met her boyfriend while working abroad for a Korean firm. They wanted to marry but her family would not give their blessing without meeting the prospective groom first. After they learned she was pregnant, the man convinced her to quit her job, saying he could support her.
But the man?s business fell through, and with scant resources, he convinced Kim to return to Korea unmarried. Despite promises to follow her, he vanished.
She ended up in Busan with her parents, who shunned her for giving birth out of wedlock ? a common response in Korean society. ?My mother cooked meals for me, but not for my baby,? she recalled. ?My father did not accept me as part of the family. I ran out of places to turn to.?
Kim may have been alone, but her story is not uncommon in a country where stigmatization and a lack of social services force many women to choose between abortion and adoption. While single mothers have raised their profile in recent years, groups supporting them say that the government must provide them with a safety net and begin to set straight a painful history.
The issue may be set to go under the spotlight as Korea prepares for its first female president, Park Geun-hye, who has promised to improve conditions for women. Support groups say whether Park pays attention to single mothers will be a bellwether of how thoroughly she plans to follow through on this pledge.
As yet, the President-elect?s team has not made specific policies for single mothers and they are not mentioned in its policy book of over 300 pages.
?Right now, they are included in the policies for single parents,? said an official from the policy committee of Park?s Saenuri Party, requesting anonymity. ?Once the transition committee is launched, it is possible that the issues of unmarried mothers can be discussed there.?
Entrenched attitudes
The path for Kim to keep her child was precarious. In need of work, she jumped when she heard of a job in Seoul. But with her family refusing to babysit, she made what she felt was a necessary gamble, leaving the child in the care of an adoption agency, with the promise that if potential adoptive parents were interested, she would be called.
She soon received a text message from a social worker informing her that an adoption had been finalized. ?I cried a lot that I wanted my baby, but I was told it was impossible. After fighting for three months I got her back.?
According to Statistics Korea, some 2.1 percent of babies were born outside of marriage last year, the lowest rate among member nations of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and well below the OECD average of 36.3 percent.
Some 90 percent of Korean babies adopted internationally are from single mothers, seen as representative of the social pressures facing unmarried, pregnant women.
Han Seo Seung-hee, who works with the Korean Unwed Mothers Support Network (KUMSN), believes the attitude stems from deeply ingrained Confucian mores. ?Society thinks they are immoral,? she said. The attitude prevails in spite of concerns over the nation?s aging population. Moreover, social stigma against mothers who have children out of wedlock is underpinned by the specific expression in the Korean language referring to them, ?Mi-hon-mo?, often used as a pejorative term.
Lee Jung-hee, a 31-year-old teacher in Gyeonggi Province, said people treated her differently when she decided to give birth to her son after breaking up with her boyfriend, the father.
?You can?t tell people at work, or you have to lie to them. It?s like you are a criminal,? she said.
Even at the hospital, where she received care under her insurance program, the doctor ?suddenly turned really cold? when Lee said the father might not be present at birth. Other hospital officials asked why she did not go to a care center for single mothers.
?That?s when I realized, if you become a single mother in this country, it doesn?t matter if you have a family, if you have a good job or education, or who you are. You just become the bottom of society. People treat you like crap,? she said.
Han said on the national census, if a woman reports being unmarried, it neglects to ask whether she has children. Others point out that existing cash support reinforces the separation of families and institutional help rather than empowering women to raise their children alone.
According to numbers compiled by Truth and Reconciliation for the Adoption Community of Korea (TRACK), the government provides around 1 million won for each child in a family group home facility or an orphanage; and 250,000 won for every child in foster care. Korean families who adopt are supported with a 100,000 stipend. But single parents, including unwed and divorced parent receive 50,000 per month.
Lee, the teacher, didn?t want to be institutionalized in a group home.
?If you stay in such a place for a year, or two, or three, how do you ever start over again? Someone like me _ a professional _ if I get a little support from the government, I can get back on my feet and I am willing to work,? she said.
The monthly support for single parents falls well short of considering unexpected circumstances, Lee learned. Soon after birth, her son was diagnosed with Hirschsprung?s disease, a disorder of the abdomen that required surgery.
Through support from KUMSN, she has been able to hire a babysitter, but her son?s frequent illness poses a problem for her work schedule.
Kim Jung-in, the public relations worker, said stigmatization does not stop with the mother. ?Most families don?t want to have get-togethers with single mothers and their children,? she said.
Reconciling the past, looking ahead
Jane Jeong Trenka, head of TRACK, said the high percentage of international adoptees that comes from unwed mothers binds the two groups together.
International adoptions from Korea picked up pace during the country?s rapid industrialization under the military dictatorship of Park Chung-hee, the late father of President-elect Park. Many such adoptees return to Korea to learn about the country or search for their birth parents.
Some scholars suggest that like other exports of human resources during that era, babies, especially those born out of wedlock, may have been seen as a tidy source of profit.
?The unwed mothers and their children are woven inextricably into the history of Korea?s development,? said Trenka, an adoptee.
She said the stories of the families of adoptees reveal a ?complete lack of a social safety net and of course patriarchal practices which include intense discrimination by the society and the government against single mothers and their children.?
In recent years, grassroots awareness campaigns have helped bring the issue to light. Last year, the National Assembly passed an amendment to the Single Parent Law that by 2015 will ban adoption agencies from owning facilities for unwed mothers, which activists say will reduce the influence of the agencies in the women?s decision-making process.
Groups such as KUMSN say now is the time for the government to devise policies to shore up services.
The advocates say efforts must go beyond Park?s promise to increase cash support from 50,000 won to 150,000 won and bolster housing for single parents.
Activist Han said the government can start by collecting accurate statistics on unwed mothers, because it is believed many women do not report their status. KUMSN urges the incoming administration to consider diversifying housing options, tightening regulations over adoption practices, and providing better education for pregnant, unwed women on their options.
The government should mobilize a public awareness campaign to educate society on unwed women, the group says.
Lee, the mother, says the reasons women like her and their children should be treated as normal members of society are simple.
?I pay taxes, first of all. And then every child has the right to be happy,? she said.
?I gave birth to a kid, and he is going to grow up and work for this country. We can raise these kids and make them happy. People need to be open minded, not just for me, but for the children.? <The Korea Times/Kim Young-jin>

OTTAWA ? In September, two months after China?s state-owned CNOOC Ltd. made an unexpected $15.1-billion bid for Canadian energy company Nexen Inc., Canada?s spy agency told ministers that takeovers by Chinese companies may threaten national security.
The rare warning from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), which was disclosed to Reuters by intelligence sources, did not stop the takeover. That was approved by Canadian authorities earlier this month.
The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers? latest forecast shows oil sands output will more than double to 3.1 million barrels per day (bpd) in 2020, from 1.6 million bpd in 2011. By 2025, production from the oil sands will soar to 4.2 million bpd by 2025 and cross the five million bpd mark by 2030. Continue reading.
But the intervention and an influential U.S. lawmaker?s warning in October that Canadian companies should be careful about doing business with Chinese telecom equipment companies Huawei Technologies Co. and ZTE Corp made the approval process for the deal more difficult than initially expected.
?CSIS did not like the Nexen bid and thought it was a bad idea for Chinese firms to be investing in the oil sands. It all played into their greater fears about firms like Huawei,? said one person familiar with the agency?s concerns. ?They do not want to wake up one day and realize a crucial sector of the economy is under the control of foreign interests.?
And after listening to the spy service, which usually keeps a low profile, Canada drew up surprisingly tough foreign investment rules that were unveiled when approving the Nexen deal, China?s biggest-ever successful foreign takeover. In a clampdown on companies it deems influenced by foreign governments, Canada will block similar purchases in the future.
CSIS did not like the Nexen bid and thought it was a bad idea for Chinese firms to be investing in the oil sands
CSIS has been silent about what it said to Ottawa on the Nexen transaction, and it declined to comment for this story. It didn?t specifically recommend the CNOOC deal be blocked, but rather warned more generally about such deals with Chinese entities, the person said.
In reality, the government was unlikely to want to block the CNOOC bid, given a high-profile push by Prime Minister Stephen Harper earlier in the year to boost ties with China, and given that a lot of Nexen?s assets are outside Canada, and it has underperformed other energy companies.
SPECIFIC WORRIES
By pushing back aggressively, CSIS ensured that it got foreign investment policy tightened significantly to deter similar such takeovers by companies under the sway of foreign governments.
?I think people at CSIS and elsewhere are going ?Good. That was a very good response by the government?,? said Ray Boisvert, a former CSIS assistant director of intelligence, who retired this year after almost three decades at the agency.
?It did reflect some of those deep strategic concerns that practitioners have had about this kind of investment.?
Specific worries include theft of Canadian intellectual property, espionage, computer hacking and foreign companies gaining too much influence over crucial sectors of the economy, said the person familiar with the agency?s views.
The government could, in theory, nationalize assets if it thought foreign control was problematic. But the pro-business Conservatives would likely find it politically unpalatable to take such a step.
?To be blunt, Canadians have not spent years reducing the ownership of sectors of the economy by our own governments, only to see them bought and controlled by foreign governments instead,? Harper said as he announced the new investment rules.
In October, the U.S. House of Representatives? Intelligence Committee urged U.S. firms to stop doing business with Huawei and another Chinese telecom equipment company ZTE on the grounds that Beijing could use products made by the two companies to spy.
The Huawei business caused a lot of political complications for the CNOOC bid
The House Intelligence Committee?s chairman, Rep. Mike Rogers, a Michigan Republican, urged Canada to take a similar stance, and two days later, the Canadian government indicated it would not let Huawei help build a secure government communications network because of possible security risks.
?The Huawei business caused a lot of political complications for the CNOOC bid,? another person familiar with the CNOOC deal said of the U.S. committee?s report.
Both Huawei and ZTE have repeatedly denied the allegations in the report, and China?s foreign ministry dismissed as ?baseless? the idea that security concerns could impede commercial ties.
?We hope that the relevant party can objectively and justly treat Chinese companies? overseas investment and cooperation plans, and stop actions which harm Chinese companies? image and do more to benefit the promotion of bilateral trade and business cooperation,? said ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying.
CLANDESTINE SUPPORT
In its annual report, released in September, CSIS noted risks that included espionage and illegal technology transfers, and said some foreign state-owned enterprises had ?pursued opaque agendas or received clandestine intelligence support for their pursuits? in Canada.
The agency did not give details, but added: ?When foreign companies with ties to foreign intelligence agencies or hostile governments seek to acquire control over strategic sectors of the Canadian economy, it can represent a threat to Canadian security interests.?
CSIS, hit by controversy in 2010 after its head suggested China had too much influence over some Canadian provincial politicians, did not mention any country or firm in its report.
It is unclear how much, if any, influence the United States had on the Canadian authorities? foreign investment policy.
Fen Hampson, head of the global security program at the Centre for International Governance Innovation in Waterloo, Ontario, said he had learned that a U.S. official visited Ottawa in the last few months to discuss mutual concerns about foreign state-owned enterprises.
U.S. Ambassador David Jacobson told Reuters he was not aware of such a meeting, but he noted that officials from the two countries met constantly. ?I would be surprised if almost any issue you could think of has not come up in one or more of those conversations,? he said. ?The United States has not sought to influence Canada?s decision with respect to that (CNOOC?s bid)? We respect that decision.?
The Canadian government did not respond to a request for a comment.
Chinese companies have bought up smaller Canadian energy firms before, but the July 23 bid for Nexen was their first attempt to buy one of the larger players.
Nexen has assets in Canada, the North Sea, Nigeria and the Gulf of Mexico. Technology that Nexen and its partners use for deep sea drilling could interest CNOOC.
Asked about the CSIS concerns, a spokeswoman for Industry Minister Christian Paradis replied: ?The government has the authority to take any measures it considers necessary to protect national security.?
Yet two people close to the deal noted that the Canadian government did not exercise its option to do a separate review of the potential security risks of the CNOOC-Nexen bid, again signaling its concerns were tied to overall Chinese investment rather than to this particular deal.
Under the new rules, which Paradis is responsible for enforcing, foreign state-owned enterprises can no longer buy controlling stakes in assets in the oil sands, the biggest reserve of crude oil outside Saudi Arabia and Venezuela.
Such enterprises can buy minority stakes in the oil sands, or majority stakes in companies outside the oil sands. Companies deemed to have strong government links will be treated with particular caution wherever they propose to invest.
?When it comes to our security and intelligence services, they would rather pull up the drawbridge than let it down,? said Hampson, co-author of a report on trade ties between Canada and emerging nations that he discussed with Harper in June.

If you?re marketing your business online, then it?s important that you?re using email marketing.
Email marketing is one of the best ways ever to keep in contact with your prospective customers and your current customers. Obtaining a lead for your business takes a lot of money and a lot of time investment for each one. Therefore once you?ve obtained a lead, you certainly don?t want to let that lead go. You want to be able to contact them over and over again.
Where the old ways of marketing made that quite difficult and extremely expensive through direct mail, email marketing takes that to a whole new level. First off it?s faster, meaning that instead of waiting months for your data calculations (sales, conversions, refunds, etc.)?you can have this data within a matter of days. In other words, you can see exactly what your results are fast!
It?s also way less expensive, almost to a point where comparably you could almost call email marketing free (you only need to pay for the email marketing software).
With all that being said, when using email marketing, there?s plenty to get wrong. Therefore, I?m going to give you?
Tip #1: Make Your Emails Personal?
One of the biggest mistakes that companies make when utilizing email marketing is that they try too hard to be formal. They try so hard to sound like a big company, that they turn off their email recipients right off the bat.
Emails are personal. When you email someone, either a friend, a co-worker, or even a customer service department of a company to complain or ask a question, you make that email sound as though you?re speaking right to that one person don?t you? Why? Because just 1 person will be reading that email!
So when you write an email to your email marketing list, don?t write as though you?re talking to a group. Write as though you?re speaking to one person. The more your email sounds personal, the better relationship you?ll create with your list, and therefore they?ll be more responsive.
Tip #2: Don?t Be a One-Shot and You?re Out Type of Email Marketer?
The beauty of email marketing is that it?s so cheap. Once you?ve obtained your lead, and they?re in your funnel, you?ve got a never ending opportunity to contact them?and you?ve got their permission.
Most marketers are still making this huge mistake. They?ll write one email to their new subscribers and that?s it. Or every now and then they?ll send their list an email message, only when they?re trying to sell them something.
That?s no way to create a relationship with your email marketing list.
If you?re a salesperson, and someone walks into your place of business, you don?t just suddenly walk up to them and ask if they?re ready to make a purchase do you? So why would you do that through an email?
You?ve got to start out creating a relationship with your list so that they begin to feel a connection with you. To do that, you can?t just send a one-off message and be done with it all. You?ve got to send out multiple messages. Even better, send out multiple messages for each campaign!
Don?t be afraid to be entertaining along as well informal (giving valuable information regarding your product, or service.) Doing so will make them like you even more, and show them that you?re truly looking to add value to them. They?ll see it as a friend sending a helpful message, rather than you doing email marketing.
Tip #3: Use Strong Email Marketing Software (Specifically One That Gives You Good Analytics)?
One of the things that you want to be sure to have in marketing, are strong tools. Any mechanic will tell you that their livelihood depends on the tools that they own. So does yours.
You?ll need an email provider that allows you to set up auto responders, as well as send broadcasts. You?ll also want to be certain that you have good tracking analytics, so that you know what?s working with your email marketing.
As with anything, some email services are better than others. If you?d like to see a review of an email marketing service that we picked apart;

OK, so our stocking-stuffing schedule got thrown off a little bit thanks to some other, bigger, giveaways. These things happen, right? But it's Christmas eve, we're back on the horse, and we're ready to throw more $10 Google Play Gift Cards your way.
For today's entries, we'll keep things simple: Just leave a comment on this post, telling us what sort of Android kit you'd love to see this holiday season. That's it. We'll keep giving away a gift card a day until we run out, which looks to be in early 2013 at this point.
And remember that these gift cards are good for apps, books, movies, TV shows and magazines, if you're in a region that supports them. (And if you're not, there are, ahem, ways around that.)
So good luck, happy posting, and Merry Christmas!

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Indian police used batons, tear gas and water cannon to turn back thousands of people marching on the presidential palace on Saturday in intensifying protests against the gang-rape of a woman on the streets and on social media.
The 23-year-old victim is battling for her life in hospital after she was beaten, raped for almost an hour and thrown out of a moving bus on a busy New Delhi street last Sunday. Five people have been arrested.
The protesters, largely college students, are demanding the death penalty for the accused and safety assurances for women.
New Delhi, home to about 16 million people, has the highest number of sex crimes among India's major cities. Police figures show a rape is reported on average every 18 hours and some other form of sexual attack every 14 hours.
Appealing for calm, India's junior minister for home affairs, R.P.N. Singh, said the government had listened to the protesters.
"We have assured on the floor of the house and on every platform possible that strictest action will be taken against the accused. The police have been asked to show restraint but I want to tell boys and girls that breaking barriers will not help," Singh said.
But the protests are growing amid widespread media coverage.
"If Rahul Gandhi claims to be a youth icon then he should have been here, talking to protesters and taking up the issue of women's safety," one protester said.
Gandhi, the 42-year-old scion of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty that has ruled India for most of its 65 years of independence, is widely seen as a future prime minister.
Marches, demonstrations and candlelight vigils have spread during the week to cities in states from the north of the country to the south.
In the northeastern state of Assam, hundreds of women and girls marched through the city of Guwahati on Friday, carrying placards and shouting "Hang Rapists" and "Stop Violence Against Women".

Jack Reacher is based on a series of books about a six-foot, 250-pound man, so apparently fans of the book were not pleased to hear that 5'7" Tom Cruise, more scrawny than brawny, had been cast in the role. However, he does a great job with the role; if the book fans can put away their biases, they may actually end up enjoying the film adaptation.
Jack Reacher (Cruise) is a ghost. He served in the military, mostly working as an investigator, and received many honors; and then, after that, he seemed to vanish. When James Barr (Joseph Sikora), a sniper who has shot five random people asks for him by name, he randomly shows up to talk to the DA, Rodin (Richard Jenkins) and his colleague Emerson (David Oyelowo) about the man, and ends up working with the lawyer defending the sniper, the DA's daughter, Helen (Rosamund Pike). All evidence points to Barr having committed the crime, but Reacher isn't so sure, and he must figure out the evidence before being run out of town by some shady characters.
The movie was action-packed, but did feel a little slow at times. My other complaint was that they never explained the motivation for the whole scheme (without going into more details...) at the end, and why that turn of events happened that way; we learn who was involved other than the sniper, but the reason for this person being involved is left up in the air, which kind of annoyed me. Other than that, I found the film to be very witty, as well as including great action scenes, including a few car chases as well. I can't remember the last time I saw an action movie that was this witty, actually; for example, in one scene the DA is discussing how hard Jack Reacher is to find, and then an aide pops into the room and says "a Jack Reacher is here to see you, sir," which was ironic and also pretty funny.
Yes, see this movie. Like I said, I have not read the books, so I can't tell you how it compares, but as a stand-alone film, I enjoyed it a lot. It's a little bit "fluffy" - odds are, the next day, you won't remember much for it - but it's definitely a fun ride and one worth taking. Tom Cruise proves he definitely still "has it," and he upholds his reputation as a great action star here. The film also seemed to be left open for a sequel, so perhaps we will see more of Jack Reacher in the near future.
Jack Reacher?is in theaters now and is rated PG-13 with a runtime of 130 minutes. 3.5 stars out of 5.

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Disney will release "Planes," a spin-off of Pixar's "Cars" franchise, August 9, 2013, in the United States. DisneyToon Studios is behind the film with Pixar/Disney Animation chief creative officer John Lasseter producing.
The film follows a fleet of planes, in particular Dusty. "Two and a Half Men" star Jon Cryer was to voice Dusty, but he has dropped out and the studio is now casting the part.
Disney initially intended to release "Planes" direct to video, but it will now send it into theaters domestically and overseas.
"Planes" will compete against a pair of films that summer weekend, both of which should have more adult followings. The big-ticket item will be Sony's "Elysium," Neill Blomkamp's follow-up to "District 9." Also opening that weekend is "We're the Millers," a New Line drug-smuggling comedy starring Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston.
Next summer's biggest animated movies should all be sequels save "Epic," Fox's story of a teenage girl caught in a forested battle. Beyonce Knowles' leads the voice cast. The other big openers are Despicable Me 2," "Monsters University" and "Smurfs 2."

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Friday paid tribute to U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye, a World War Two hero who represented Hawaii in Congress for more than 50 years, calling the senator who died on Monday "my earliest political inspiration."
Inouye, who lost his right arm in battle and gained national attention during the Senate's Watergate hearings, died at age 88. Obama, former President Bill Clinton and Vice President Joe Biden spoke about Inouye's legacy at a funeral service at the Washington National Cathedral.
Obama, who was born in Hawaii, recalled seeing Inouye, a senator not "out of central casting," ask tough questions during the televised Watergate hearings, which dominated television during Obama's first-ever visit to the U.S. mainland.
"The person who fascinated me most was this man of Japanese descent with one arm, speaking in this courtly baritone, full of dignity and grace," Obama said.
Obama, then 11, said he was beginning to sense that "fitting into the world" would not always be easy as the son of a white woman and black man, and said Inouye captured his attention between visits to Disneyland and Yellowstone National Park.
"It hinted to me what might be possible in my own life," Obama said.
"I think it's fair to say that Danny Inouye was perhaps my earliest political inspiration."
'ALOHA AND MAHALO'
Inouye enlisted in the U.S. Army shortly after the 1941 Japanese attack on the American Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor.
The U.S. government had declared Japanese-Americans "enemy aliens" as a result of the attack, and Inouye, then 17, was among those who petitioned for the right to serve in the U.S. military to prove their allegiance.
Inouye lost his right arm while charging a series of German machine-gun nests on a hill in Italy in 1945.
At the funeral, former President Clinton called Inouye "one of the most remarkable Americans I have ever known."
"They blew his arm off in World War Two, but they never, ever laid a finger on his heart," Clinton said.
Between Christian hymns sung by the cathedral's choir and Hawaiian songs sung by a ukulele trio, Democratic political leaders lauded Inouye for his humility and ability to find common ground without giving up on his principles.
"Danny Inouye possessed that intangible thing that every leader longs to possess, and that is he would never waver on what he thought was right," Biden said.
Eric Shinseki, secretary of Veterans Affairs and a former U.S. Army chief of staff, thanked Inouye, who he said paved the way for generations of Japanese-Americans in public service.
"I have had the broadest shoulders to stand on," said Shinseki, who is Japanese-American, and was born in Hawaii. "Aloha senator. Aloha and mahalo."

An algorithm can evaluate tweets within the overall Twitter flow to assess their veracity. Larry Greenemeier reports
Subscribe via iTunes
Twitter has become a go-to news source in times of crisis. However, as we learned once again during the Newtown tragedy, inaccurate or even purposefully deceptive tweets can just as easily spread misinformation.
Conventional wisdom holds that eventually Twitter users themselves will sort fact from rumor. Two problems here. You have to pay attention long enough for this to happen. And you have to hope that falsehoods don?t spread beyond social media, where they are more difficult to correct.
A team of current and former Yahoo researchers is using natural language processing and machine learning to address this problem. When their algorithm is presented with a random false tweet and a random true tweet within the context of the overall flow of information, their software assesses the true tweet as more credible 86 percent of the time. The study is in an upcoming issue of the journal Internet Research. [Carlos Castillo, Marcelo Mendoza and Barbara Poblete, Predicting Information Credibility in Time-Sensitive Social Media]
Not exactly a social media lie detector yet, but if this research pans out, it could do a lot to help Twitter?s credibility in crunch time.

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - The publisher of "Life & Style" and "In Touch," which is being sued by Tom Cruise for printing that the "Jack Reacher" star had abandoned his daughter Suri following his divorce from Katie Holmes, has fired back at the actor's suit. Bauer's answer, filed Friday in U.S. District Court in California, also asserts a number of defenses, including that it's protected by the First, Fifth and 14th amendments of the U.S. ...
